BBC Scotland’s head of news and current affairs has told The Drum that he fully supports the moves by Alex Salmond to introduce the Scottish Broadcasting Commission.

Athol Duncan said that anything that “shakes up” the broadcasting industry in Scotland would be welcome.

Duncan said of the move: “We do need a debate about the industry at the moment, there’s no doubt about that. It’s the right time from the BBC’s point of view and it’s a good time to debate how we all work together to develop the industry in the future.”

Duncan continued: “The debate comes at a very useful time and examining the industry and how we will work together to improve the industry in Scotland is something that can only be welcomed.”

The draft remit of the Scottish Broadcasting Commission was announced by Alex Salmond last week.

The commission will be headed up by Duncan’s predecessor Blair Jenkins.
