Former PWLC creative directors, Pete Camponi and Rick Ward have returned to agency life, joining Leeds-based retail specialists Gratterpalm.

The duo co-founded PWLC in 2001 with John Longworth and Mike Phillipson, now managing director at Propaganda. The agency handled a number of substantial accounts, including The Car People, Fox’s Biscuits and the lion’s share of the DFS above-the-line business.

However, the departure of Phillipson and a number of the agency’s key accounts resulted in a number of cutbacks and Camponi and Ward quit the agency in May 2006, shortly before the closure of the business.

Since then, the creative partners have been freelancing for a number of agencies in Yorkshire and other parts of the country.

Commenting on their decision to join Gratterpalm, Ward said: “Quite simply, it was too good an opportunity to turn down.

“They’re a big enough agency that they can really make a difference and there’s a lot of ambition to become one of the biggest agencies in the north. The desire and excitement within the agency is fantastic and, with the blue-chip clients it works with, we had no hesitation in joining the team.”

Both Ward and Camponi have become board members at the agency, alongside Gordon Bethell, Robert Beckram and Gareth Healy.

The pair first worked together in 1996, when Ward joined Poulter Partners, where Camponi was creative director. Previously, Camponi had held positions with the likes of JWT Manchester and Saatchi & Saatchi, while Ward worked at Leo Burnett Hong Kong and Publicis London.

Recent clients the creative team has worked with include Benson Beds, Money Shop, ITC Classic Holidays, DFS Furniture and Johnstone’s Paints.

Ward confirmed plans to add to the creative team over the coming months.
