Peter Saville, one of the UK’s foremost designers and Manchester City Council’s creative director, is to judge the competition to create an art installation for The Hive, a new development being developed in Manchester’s Northern Quarter by Argent.

Saville will be joined by representatives from the worlds of art and design, architecture and the media to select a design suitable for the 145,000 sq ft office building.

Entrants have until Friday 22 June to produce their concepts for the art instillation and be in contention for the £5,000 cash prize.

Argent’s joint chief executive, David Partridge said: “We’re pleased that so many Mancunian designers are showing an interest in this once in a lifetime opportunity to leave a permanent, creative mark on this famously creative city, not to mention win £5,000.

“We are also tremendously excited at Peter Saville’s involvement. He will add kudos to the development while presenting potential entrants with the opportunity to have their work reviewed by one of Britain’s most influential designers.”

The winning installation will take the form of a “brise soleil” metal solar shade across the front of the building, an idea, which originated from HKR lead architect and competition judge Jon Matthews. The Hive has been designed to appeal to creative people and businesses looking to expand into new sustainable office space.

In addition to Peter Saville, David Partridge and Jon Matthews, The judging panel will include Manchester City Council leader Sir Richard Leese, Manchester City Galleries director Virginia Tandy, Urban Life Manchester Evening News property editor Jill Burdett and Dinosaur creative agency directors Mark Beaumont and Chris Lloyd.

The Hive was designed by HKR Architects and Piercy Connor Architects. For further details on how to enter the competition, visit www.thehivemanchester.co.uk.
