ASPIRE, an initiative created by the North East Chamber of Commerce and the CBI North East to encourage young people to stay in the region after leaving education, has appointed O Communications to help deliver its message.

The five-year programme, which kicked off with a research project, found that 60 per cent of northeast school leavers believe their careers lie outside of the region.

O Communications has been drafted in to create a PR campaign that will motivate employers in the northeast to engage with young people and raise their awareness of the career opportunities that are available on their doorsteps.

Kari Owers, managing partner of the Newcastle-based agency, said: “ASPIRE is a campaign that every single business owner in the northeast can’t fail to be part of. The ageing population of the northeast, coupled with increasing youth migration to other areas of the UK, leaves every sector facing varying skills shortages.”

Mary Coyle, chief executive of ASPIRE, said: “The PR campaign is practical, pragmatic and above all inspiring, and we hope it will mobilise the whole northeast business community to take action and start talking to our young people in schools about staying in this region to make their lives a success.”
