The Evening Times was named as Regional Newspaper of the Year last week at the Newspaper Society’s Circulation, Editorial & Promotions awards.

Judges praised the newspaper for “its brave investigations, solid tight editorial and being a strong paper from front cover to back.”

Scotland on Sunday also won in three categories, ‘Best in-paper reader offer (daily and Sunday paid-for newspapers)’, ‘Best multimedia campaign’ and ‘Best single-copy sales initiative’.

Other winners at the ceremony, held at the Botanic Gardens in Birmingham included Ipswich’s Evening Star, which won Community Newspaper of the Year (daily and Sunday category) and was also runner-up in the Regional Newspaper of the Year category.

Northcliffe Media’s Lincolnshire Echo won the Design and Layout of the Year category, in which the Evening Times also won a certificate of merit.

Keith Parker, chairman of the Newspaper Qualifications Council, who was on the judging panel for the awards said, “Once again the regional press has proved itself, with the standard of entries being high in 2007...The depth and range of entries in this award proved campaigning traditions of the UK regional press are alive and well.”
