Reports that Clydesdale Bank is to be the new sponsor of the Scottish Premier League are “premature” according to both parties.

The bank was reported to be set to agree an £8million a year sponsorship deal with the SPL, after the nine year deal with the Bank of Scotland comes to an end this summer.

Clydesdale Bank is also reported to have beaten phone company O2 to the deal.

A spokesperson for Clydesdale Bank commented; “Clydesdale Bank has a strong record of investment in sport and in Scotland however, talks of a done deal are premature.”

A spokesperson for the SPL also refused to confirm reports; “Our sponsorship discussions are ongoing. We have had strong interests in the title sponsorship opportunity but until a deal is finalised and approved by our member clubs those discussions will remain commercially confidential.”
