Monday will see the launch of a new project by Glasgow Caledonian University that aims to support developing creative businesses.

Called Caledonian Creates, the project will be launched by Newsnight presenter and journalist Kirsty Wark at the University’s North Hanover Building and it brings together the university’s expertise in a wide variety of creative areas including fashion business, international marketing, gaming technology, multimedia visualisation, communication, mass media and journalism, as well as interior, product and graphic design. It will offer creative companies expertise in business development and consultancy, as well as developing a programme of networking opportunities and increasing student placements.

Caledonian Creates was developed by university’s Centre for Creative Industries, which has already forged links with companies such as Artex-Rawlplug and Curious Oranj.

The centre’s director Bruce Wood, said: “Glasgow Caledonian is a university with a wealth of expertise touching on almost all of the creative sectors identified by the Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

“Through Caledonian Creates we are bringing together all this expertise under one banner, and providing business across Scotland and the UK with access to consultancy, continuous professional development opportunities and knowledge transfer opportunities.”

The latest figures from the Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport show that the creative industries, the fastest growing sector in the UK, are worth £53.4 billion per year, growing by an average of 8% per annum between 1997 and 2001.

Caledonian Creates is being launched with an end of year show featuring student work from a number of the university’s creative programmes. Visitors will be able to see beautiful fashion exhibits, with designs inspired by Japanese cool crossed with British tradition, as well as the work of Royal Society of Arts prizewinner Jamie Cook. A large number of working products including pottery handbags, jog-free cameras for action-sport filming and a suspended rust-free razor will also be exhibited; all designed and manufactured by some of Scotland’s most talented students.

Speaking about the initiative, Wark said: “Creative business in Scotland is booming, from computer generated images to film making we need to make use of each other’s abilities. From the interior designer who envisages a space or building, to the product designer who fills it, Caledonian Creates is taking steps towards connecting people in the business of creativity.”

Caledonian Creates is open to the public from Wednesday 22nd – Friday 24th June 2005, 9-5pm in the university’s North Hanover Street Building showing selected works from the university’s creative programmes.
