Jim Raeburn, the director of both the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society and the Scottish Newspaper Publishers Association, has played down rumours that the two organisations are set to merge imminently to create the Scottish Newspaper Society.

“The two organisations are quite separate,” he said. “Where there is a shared interest, as I’m director of both I can communicate that. The possibility [of a merger] has been mooted within the organisation from time to time. The question is whether it is beneficial for either organisation.”

Raeburn wouldn’t be drawn on the benefits of creating a new organisation: “I certainly wouldn’t go so far as to say there was no value in it. It would be silly to say it would happen or it definitely wouldn’t happen.”

The SNPA has a General Meeting every quarter, while the SDNS meets three times a year.
