The Dunfermline Press has purchased three weekly newspapers in East Lothian and the Scottish Borders.

The sale, for an undisclosed sum, sees the East Lothian Courier, Border Telegraph and Peebleshire News, the last family-owned weekly newspaper titles in the Borders, move to Dunfermline Press, which already has local newspaper interests throughout Scotland and Ireland.

Deirdre Romanes, chief executive of Dunfermline Press, said: “We have paid a generous price in a competitive arena to make this purchase, but we’re committed to bringing these three, well-established titles to our stable.”

The titles were put on the market following the death of Ken Whitson, who bought the papers from S&UN in 1987.

Earlier this year Dunfermline Press bought a trio of Irish publications for £13m, adding to an Irish portfolio that already included Anglo Celt, one of Ireland’s oldest newspapers.
