Gorman: already paying dividends as an employee of Whitespace.

Mark Gorman, former managing director of 1576, has returned to the Scottish marketing industry as head of business development and strategy at the design consultancy of which he was once chairman.

Gorman shocked the industry last year when he quit as boss of 1576, but he has now joined Edinburgh-based design firm Whitespace as part of a significant development that also sees the design consultancy appoint a new design director, in the form of former Navyblue senior designer Iain Valentine, and a new account director, Emma Jardine, who spent ten years at The Leith Agency.

The expansion comes as Whitespace secures the Bank of Scotland corporate bank website business after a competitive pitch with many of Scotland’s leading design firms.

The consultancy, which was part of a share buy-back from 1576 in March 2003, will now work on the newly combined corporate website, which will go live in the coming weeks.

The consultancy has also picked up clients such as DTZ, after a six-way pitch, Burness Solicitors, Night Train Events, Kenmore Homes, Belhaven Breweries and a public sector client that remains unnamed.

Speaking of the developments, Don Galloway, MD at Whitespace, said: “Following a time when business has been tough in this industry we’ve decided that it’s time to shake off this ‘hidden gem’ tag that seems to define us. Our new people have quickly settled in and complement an already very strong team, so I’m feeling pretty confident about the future, not least because of our strong new business run of recent times.”
