It has emerged that Newsquest may be preparing to launch a new ‘compact’ version of The Herald in a bid to drive up readership.

The move will make the paper the third UK broadsheet to launch a smaller, tabloid-sized version following the launch of both the Independent and the Times compact editions in recent months. Both papers have found the tactic to be very successful.

According to sources within the industry, Newsquest is said to be in ‘serious discussion’ with regards to launching the smaller-format paper within the next two months, and could be looking to staff up in the coming weeks.

There is said to be complications, however, with the production of the compact edition, due to the Herald’s Cambuslang-based printer also printing the Scottish Daily Mail.

Tim Blott, managing director of Newsquest Scotland, was unavailable for comment.
