Unique Media Sales has burst onto the magazine sales scene with the news that Hachette Filipacchi has appointed the team to handle the regional brief for its portfolio of nine magazines.

The contract, which is worth an undisclosed seven figure sum, will see UMS take charge of selling space in Red, Sugar, Elle, Elle Girl, Elle Decoration, Inside Soap, All About Soap, B and tvhits!. The contract previously resided with fellow Mancunian firm The Pepper Group.

The move is significant for The Unique Communications Group as it marks the first time the firm has added publishing sales to its range of communications services. Robert Johnstone, previously the MD and original founder of Media Sales Network, takes charge of heading up the service. Johnstone joined Unique in 2001 after playing an important part in landing Emap\'s regional sales brief at MSN.

He said of the development, \"it was always my objective to grow UMS into a serious player and the Hachette win helps us to do that. I relish the challenge to grow the business in the regions, they have some great magazines.\"

The win is expected to lead to rapid staffing up at UMS\'s base in Salford Quays.
