Newsquest has made public its decision to remove bulk sales from its Scottish circulation figures.

The company has stated that it will only count ‘actively purchased copies’ in the circulation figures for its Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times titles from now on, disregarding bulk copies which are sold en-masse for knock-down prices.

Tim Blott, managing director of Newsquest Scotland, said: "Bulk sales which consist of lowered price copies are a distraction from our excellent circulation performance. All three titles are currently selling more full-priced copies year on year. We will be urging other publishers in Scotland to adopt a similar approach which we feel is in the best long term interest of the newspaper industry."

The decision is believed to be a swipe at rival newspaper publishers, who have relied heavily on bulk sales to bolster their circulation figures in recent years.
