Glasgow City Council has denied that its PR department has been criticised for a lack of pro-activity.

The allegations, which were reported by The Herald, suggested that an independent study had found that the council’s PR department was failing to promote the council’s activities effectively.

There was also suggestions that the council’s head of PR and marketing, John Brown – the brother of Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown – is now planning to leave as a result.

A source at the council said: “There is a lot of anger in the department about these allegations. We do not blame the media for reporting any of these stories, but we are unhappy that people are spreading stories or making conclusions which are false.

“John has intimated that he is looking to take early retirement. But this has not been prompted by any criticism.”

At present it is uncertain who will replace Brown when he retires. The council is currently preparing for a restructure, which is to be implemented by new chief executive George Black when he takes up his post in September.

A decision will be made shortly after Black has been installed.
