Falkirk-born Stephen Carter has been appointed as the first chief executive of the new media regulatory body Ofcom, which will merge the five current regulators - the ITC, the Broadcasting Standards Commission, Oftel, The Radio Authority and The Radio Communications Agency.

Carter was the man who led NTL in to bankruptcy last year as managing director with debts of £13 billion. However he was favourite to land this post due to his wide-ranging experience within the communications business.

Ofcom is now searching for a Scottish member for its board and advertisements have already run in national newspapers in Scotland.

The search is being headed up in Scotland by Ronnie Cleland of Thomson Partners.
