Walmsley: top man in the regions

It has been announced that Ted Walmsley, the regional sales director for the Telegraph Group, will head up the new joint Telegraph/Mirror Group sales house, Apollo.

Currently the Telegraph Group's regional sales are handled from the company's Manchester office and a satellite operation in Edinburgh, while the Mirror Group has offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Oldham and Newcastle.

Once the new Apollo operation is in place both Manchester teams will be relocated under the one roof, though it is presently unclear as to whether this will be at the Mirror's Oldham premises or at a new site. The other offices will all report to Walmsley.

Walmsley said: "If you take my personal aspirations and dreams out of it, by having one person at the head of Apollo it gives the organisation an enormous amount of clout. The key thing is that we will be able to sit at these board meetings in London and we can say 'this is how the regions are doing.'"

The announcement of the Apollo deal has also caused concern within both companies about the possibility of redundancies, particularly at management level in the Mirror Group.

Walmsley comments: "The fear is that everyone's going to lose their jobs, but in actual fact we will need the right number of people in place to ensure all the geographical areas are covered. Clearly we are going to want the experienced members of the Mirror to buy into what we want, but these guys have 40 years experience, so we'll have to wait and see what they decide."

Mirror Group northern ad controller Chris Candish has worked at Oldham since 1985. He said: "The company has reported that Ted is on the company board. We've all got to look at who does what and who answers to who. There are discussions going on over the next few months."
